We’re constantly bombarded with skin care products advertisements that claim a whole host of amazing benefits, but what products do we actually need?
Here at Ashes 2 Ashes, we’re dedicated to giving you the true facts about the products you use. There’s nothing worse than shelling out hundreds of dollars on products that do squat, so this post is designed to give you the ultimate basics to skincare. There are also a few little add ons thrown in for those that want a little extra oomph added to their routine.
First, lets go through the products you will need to complete this routine, and a little later we’ll go through the order you should be applying them in.
No matter your skin type, it’s important to find a cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin. Many people tend to use products that make their skin feel ‘squeaky clean’ which actually can lean to your skin over-producing oil. Some cleansers we love that are gentle include Cetaphil Cleanser, Purity Cleanser from Philosophy, Soy Face Cleanser from Fresh and Toleriane from La Roche Posay
Moisturiser is a must no matter what your skin type, but the thickness of your moisturiser is entirely up to your preference. A good moisturiser should soak into the skin and leave it feeling soft and supple, without leaving a greasy feeling. Our favourite moisturisers are Paula’s Choice Daily Moisturiser, Simple Light Moisturiser, Creme de la Mer and the Lancome Genefique Day Moisturiser.
The best serums add a layer of protection to the skin, as well as provide an anti-oxidant boost. If you’re after just one serum, your best bet are those that contain active Vitamin C. Our favourites include the C-Firma Day Serum from Drunk Elephant (do a patch test if you have sensitive skin), C15 Super Booster from Paula’s Choice to add to serum, C E Ferulic Treatment from SkinCeuticals, Resist Super Antioxidant Serum from Paula’s Choice and the Genefique Serum from Lancome.
No matter who you are, what age, nationality or geographic location you need sunscreen. It has been proven time and time again that sun damage is the biggest cause of premature ageing and skin issues. Find yourself a good lightweight facial sunscreen with at least SFP 30 to help protect your skin. Our faves are any of the face products by Sunsense and the Clinique Super City Block.
It seems like everyone and their mothers swear by cleansing brushes. If you’re a heavy makeup wearer, I definitely recommend them as they can remove a lot more makeup
Chemical Exfoliants (AHA, BHA)
Step 1: Cleanser (Optional)
For those that aren’t aware, you don’t actually have to cleanse your face twice a day. Cleanser is designed to rid your skin of built up oil, sweat, dirt and makeup from the day, none of which really builds up while we sleep. It’s entirely up to you if you want to cleanse in the morning but for those with dryer skin, you’ll find that your skin will feel a lot less stripped if you cleanse once a day.
